Welcome to the NJHS homepage where you can get copies of all handouts from meeting and updates on upcoming events! I am glad to so many parents and students be a part of the 2011-12 NJHS family. Some projects we are involved with so far this year: Wildfire Relief efforts, Coats for Kids, No Place for Hate school campaign, Dell Children's Hospital Holiday goodie bags for patients, and much more to come in the Spring!

Students: Make sure you are keeping up with documenting your service hours! If you lose your form, you can print another one from this site.

7th GRADE CANDIDATE APPLICATIONS:
On March 21st, the 7th grade candidates were invited to attend a meeting to receive their application for membership. Ms. Humphries reviewed all parts of the application with the students and the guidelines. Applications are due to Ms. Humphries by 3:30 pm on Wednesday, April 11th. No exceptions. Students are welcome to see me before school, after school, at lunch and during RODEO with any questions. Copies of the application, checklist, information sheet and directions on how to calculate overall average are available on this page.

Important Dates:

Monday, Oct. 17 : Orientation Meeting for 7th grade parents and students at 3:45 in the library

Friday, Dec. 9: 8th grade Service Record Due (10 points)
March 21-23: Applications available for 7th graders
April 11: Applications due & 7th grade Service Record due (10 points)
Late April/Early May: New members receive letters
Friday, May 11: 8th grade Service Record Due (15 points)
Mid-May: Induction/Farewell ceremony for 7th and 8th graders

Upcoming Service Opportunities:

KEEP AUSTIN BEAUTIFUL: Keep Austin Beautiful will be having thier annual clean sweep on April 14, after the event, the thank you party with free food, drinks, t-shirts, music and more fun will take place at Fiesta gardens. Please contact Bertha if you want to sign up at bdiazaustin@gmail.com
FOOD BANK: If you would like to volunteer also for the Food Bank, please email Bertha so she can get a count. They are sometimes available for Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings (6-8pm) which is child/family night.
No Place for Hate® Coalition Meeting
The Student Council and National Junior Honor Society are working together to make O. Henry Middle School a No Place for Hate campus. The No Place for Hate® initiative provides educators and students with the resources to ensure that anti-bias and diversity education are an integral part of the school curriculum. No Place for Hate® also helps to create and sustain inclusive school environments where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to succeed by promoting respect for individual difference while challenging bigotry and prejudice. Volunteer to help set-up or clean-up at the College & Career Fair. Set-up starts at 7:15 am and Clean-up will last until 4:15. Please email Ms. Humphries if you would like to sign up to help and specify which shift.
Make a poster (.5 point) or banner (1 point) for the College & Career Fair: Due Tuesday 11/15 to me. Guidelines to follow when making the posters/banners are attached on the right.
Poster for Coats for Kids: A poster made outside of class will earn .5 service points. All posters must be made by Friday, 11/4. Poster expectations are posted on this page under "Signs for Donation Bins." Signs can be for the hallway or to attach to bins.
Peer Tutoring: Turn in completed application (copy attached on right) to Ms. Montemayor.
Austin High School Monster Concert Carnival from 2:00 – 8:00 on Saturday, October 29th. More information to come with a volunteer sign-up form.
This will be a 1st come, 1st serve as only 12 volunteers are needed for both events.
Keep Austin Beautiful will be in link with and UT vs Kansas St game
Date: Nov 19 at 10:30 am for 5 hours (breaks provided).

Champs League at WAYA. (West Austin Youth Association.) Each volunteer participates by being a "buddy" to a disabled child in sports activities. It is free for volunteers. More can be found on this link. www.waya.org
October 10, 2011: Babysit for teachers during staff development from 8:00-3:30. Email Ms. Humphries with your time commitment. Report to the library on Monday.
